深海に潜水し、主にイカを捕食するクジラ。　らうす沖の根室海峡には、巨大なオスの群れがやってくる。　観察適期は、８月－９月上旬。　
They dive into a deep sea and capture mainly squids. Groups of big males are coming at Nemuro Strait near Rausu. The best season is Aug.-early Sept.

　知床半島　らうす港から出航する２時間半の観光船が最もマッコウクジラに出会える可能性が高い。　８－９月は、マッコウクジラの出現する海域を中心に運航する。　９月中旬以降は海が荒れやすく欠航率が多くなる。 知床半島のウトロ側では見られない。
　Cruise boat from Rausu is the best way to meet Sperm Whale. 2.5 hours cruises are focused on Sperm Whale in Aug. and Sept. The sea condition become rough and cruises are often canceled after 2nd week of Sept. There is no chance of seeing Sperm Whale at Utoro side of Shiretoko.

　ゆれる船上からの撮影となるため、三脚はほぼ使えない。　船とマッコウクジラとの距離が状況により大きく変化し、比較的近距離で撮影できる場合もあるので、手持ち撮影可能なズームレンズが適している。　７０－３００㎜ あるいは７０－４００㎜　程度が使いやすい。
　Tripod does not work well usually, as we are going to shoot from swaying boat. Telephoto lens of handheld would be best choice as the distance to whales changes very much. 70-300mm or 70-400mm would be most useful.
