小川の河口、海岸、港湾、道路沿い、住宅地など、人の暮らしに近い所。 シマフクロウの繁殖には、一年間で5000匹前後の魚を安定して捕獲できることのできる水辺が必要。
River mouth, sea coast, port, road side, residential area. They mostly live very close to human life.　They need fish rich environment where they can catch about 5000 fishes/year for stable breeding.

知床半島、羅臼のシマフクロウオブザバトリーでは、シマフクロウに配慮した特殊な照明施設により、観察小屋の中から夜間のシマフクロウの自然な行動を観察撮影する事ができます。　昼間のシマフクロウは警戒心が強く、巣の周辺に立ち入る事は大きな影響を与えます。　昼間の観察撮影を試みる事は、どうかご遠慮ください。
Fish-Owl observatory in Shiretoko Rausu is the best place for observation and photography. As this observatory has a special lighting system, visitors can observe and shoot photo of nigh action. Trying to find Fish-Owl in day time give them big stress. Please never think about day time observation or photography.

シマフクロウオブザバトリーでの撮影では、400㎜望遠レンズとフルサイズカメラ、または、300㎜望遠とAPSカメラが最適。翼を広げ魚を捕る場面は、600㎜では翼が画面からはみ出したり、ピントが合いにくくなります。
400mm with full size camera or 300mm with cropped camera are the best for photography at Fish-Owl observatory. 600mm will be too long especially for hunting and flying pictures.
